Crossed Origins

International grapes that found a new home in Portugal.

There are grapes we associate with certain countries. And then there are those that cross borders, take root in unfamiliar soils and find a new identity.

This month we follow international grape varieties into Portugal, and the producers who chose to plant something different.

Twelve wines. Two boxes. Familiar grapes with a Portuguese accent.

Explore the Boxes

The November Edition

There is still so much Portugal to discover, even in grapes you thought you knew.

This month's selection follows grapes that travelled far from home: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

From the Atlantic influence of Lisboa and the sandy soils of the Setúbal Peninsula to the clay-limestone of Bairrada, the warmth of the Algarve and the Alentejo, the Tejo and the continental climate of Beira Interior, each wine shows a different side of a familiar grape, shaped by climate, soil and the choices of the people who planted it.

You may notice that many of these wines are labelled Vinho Regional rather than DOC: many DOC rules limit which grape varieties can be used. It says nothing about quality. Here, it is the freedom to try something different.

Every taste, a journey.

Meet Sérgio Magalhães

Sommelier at Yon Wine

I choose the wines for the Wine Club for their character and for what they tell us about the places they come from.

What I enjoy most in this selection is the courage of producers who decided to plant something different in their own vineyards, and let a foreign grape speak with a Portuguese accent.

Would you like to know which Portuguese grapes are closest to these? Write to me at sergio.magalhaes@yonwine.com. I would be delighted to answer.
