Producers Worth Discovering

Small producers, new names and a few classics worth a second look.

Some of the most rewarding wine discoveries begin with the people behind the bottle.

This month we bring together producers worth discovering, classic or new and innovative, each with their own story, vision and approach to winemaking.

Twelve producers. Two boxes. A whole Portugal to explore.

Explore the Boxes

The October Edition

There are wines we already know. And there are wines we didn't know we were looking for.

This month's selection takes us across Portugal, bringing together distinctive producers, native grape varieties and different approaches to winemaking.

From the freshness of Alvarinho at Quinta da Lixa to the clay-amphora tradition of Honrado in Alentejo, from the Atlantic vineyards of Colares to the old vines of the Douro and the heritage of Madeira wine, each bottle reveals a different side of Portuguese wine.

Discovering the people, places and stories behind these wines is the goal of this selection. Because discovering wine is not just about what is in the glass. It is also about the people who make it and the places that shape it.

Every taste, a journey.

The Standard Box

Five regions, six producers and very different ways of making wine.

Suggested order: 01 to 06. But there is no right order and no test to pass: start with the bottle that makes you most curious.

1Quinta da Lixa Alvarinho Escolha 2025 bottle

White · Vinho Verde DOC · Alvarinho

Quinta da Lixa Alvarinho Escolha 2025

Quinta da Lixa

One of Portugal's most expressive and versatile grapes, in a fresh, direct version with a touch of complexity. One of my go-to whites when I want something to go with light, simple food.

10–12 °C · Standard white glass · Drink now–2028

On the table Grilled fish, shellfish or fresh salads. Also lovely with Comté, Gruyère or vintage Cheddar.

2Dona Maria White 2025 bottle

White · Alentejano Regional · Arinto, Antão Vaz, Alvarinho

Dona Maria White 2025

Dona Maria

An Alentejo white, riper and fuller than the Alvarinho before it. No sweetness on the palate: Antão Vaz and Alvarinho bring ripe fruit, while Arinto keeps it fresh and in balance.

11–13 °C · Standard white glass · Drink now–2028

On the table Spiced and vegetarian dishes like lentil curry, baked ham, Brie or Bûche de Chèvre.

3Campolargo Sparkling Rosé 2021 bottle

Sparkling rosé · Bairrada DOC · Pinot Noir

Campolargo Sparkling Rosé 2021

Campolargo

From one of Bairrada's classic producers: a traditional-method sparkling wine with a fine, lively mousse, showing how well Pinot Noir does in clay-limestone soils near the Atlantic.

10–12 °C · Flute (try a white glass too) · Drink now–2028

On the table Almost any dish, or none at all. Try it with sushi or grilled salmon, tuna or rainbow trout.

4Viúva Gomes São Martinho Castelão 2023 bottle

Red · Lisboa Regional (Colares) · Castelão

Viúva Gomes São Martinho Castelão 2023

Viúva Gomes

The Atlantic terroir of Sintra and Colares, with a surprising approach. Made from Castelão, it can't carry the Colares DOC (reds there must be Ramisco). Pale and light, it recalls a classic Burgundy Pinot Noir.

12–14 °C · Burgundy glass · Decant 30 min · Drink now–2032

On the table A red for fish: spiced salmon, lobster rolls or a clam bake. Or a smash burger or tomato pizza.

5Honrado Talha Red 2025 bottle

Red · Alentejo DOC (Vinho de Talha) · Field blend

Honrado Talha Red 2025

Honrado

Made the way the Alentejo has made wine since Roman times: fermented in large clay amphorae, the talhas. Full-bodied and spicy, from Alfrocheiro, Aragonez, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet.

12–14 °C · Medium red glass · Drink now–2030

On the table Game like wild boar or partridge stew, smoked brisket, smoked Gouda or aged Monterey Jack.

6Aneto Reserva Red 2021 bottle

Red · Douro DOC · Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz

Aneto Reserva Red 2021

Aneto

A family project with great attention to detail: a modern Douro red that balances the region's natural power with elegance and freshness. Full and structured, with fine, silky tannins.

16–18 °C · Bordeaux glass · Decant 30 min · Drink now–2035

On the table Prime rib, grilled ribeye or slow-cooked beef. In Portugal, roast lamb or arroz de pato.

The wines

The Premium Box

Six very different sides of Portugal.

Suggested order: 01 to 06. But there is no right order and no test to pass: start with the bottle that makes you most curious.

1A Serenada Espuma do Mar Pét-Nat Rosé 2025 bottle

Sparkling (pet nat) · Península de Setúbal · Touriga Nacional

A Serenada Espuma do Mar Pét-Nat Rosé 2025

A Serenada

Inspired by the nearby Atlantic and made with minimal intervention. Bottled before fermentation ends, it develops its bubbles naturally, keeping the purity of the fruit and the violet side of Touriga Nacional.

8–10 °C · Standard white glass · Drink now

On the table No food needed: a fresh welcome when friends arrive. Or Caesar salad, pepperoni pizza, carbonara.

View this wine
2Chão Rijo Rosé 2025 bottle

Rosé · Lisboa Regional · Castelão

Chão Rijo Rosé 2025

Adega Regional de Colares

A single-varietal rosé made entirely from Castelão. Distinctly Atlantic: vineyards close to the sea in Sintra and Colares bring freshness, minerality and a mouth-watering salinity.

8–10 °C · Standard white glass · Drink now–2028

On the table Sushi, fish tacos, a grilled-chicken Caesar salad or, in Portugal, choco frito.

View this wine
3Naturae by Lusus 2024 bottle

White · Dão DOC · Encruzado

Naturae by Lusus 2024

Lusus

Lusus naturae means a whim of nature. Minimal intervention, yet very precise, with Encruzado, one of my favourite Portuguese grapes, at the centre: orange blossom, peach, wet stone. Elegant from start to finish.

10–12 °C · Standard white glass · Drink now–2030

On the table Clams, mussels or scallops, grilled sea bass with greens, or arroz de lingueirão.

View this wine
4Torre de Palma Reserva Arinto & Alvarinho 2025 bottle

White · Alentejo DOC · Arinto, Alvarinho

Torre de Palma Reserva Arinto & Alvarinho 2025

Torre de Palma

A historic estate in the north of the Alentejo, worth a visit in its own right. Arinto brings acidity and Alvarinho adds body, reflecting a part of the Alentejo where days are hot and nights are cool.

12 °C · Large white glass (Chardonnay style) · Drink now–2030

On the table Fresh oysters, coconut shrimp curry, roast chicken or a mushroom risotto.

View this wine
5Quinta da Gaivosa Red 2021 bottle

Red · Douro DOC · Field blend

Quinta da Gaivosa Red 2021

Alves de Sousa

A classic field blend from very old vines, with many indigenous Douro varieties planted side by side. Fresh, with a linear acidity that contrasts with the traditional power of Douro reds. Very elegant.

16–18 °C · Bordeaux glass · Decant 30 min · Drink now–2036

On the table Roast kid goat, prime rib, beef Wellington, or partridge and venison stews.

View this wine
6Barbeito Single Harvest Tinta Negra 2015 bottle

Fortified · Madeira DOC · Tinta Negra, medium dry

Barbeito Single Harvest Tinta Negra 2015

Barbeito

Madeira is still one of the world's most underrated wines: its bright acidity makes it far less cloying than other fortifieds. Aged in canteiro, in casks warmed under the cellar roof. Mind the serving temperature!

10–12 °C · Standard white glass · Decant 30 min · Drink now–2050

On the table Roast duck or pheasant, strong blue cheese, or desserts with nuts and dried fruit.

Meet Sérgio Magalhães

Sommelier at Yon Wine

I choose the wines for the Wine Club for their character and for what they tell us about the places they come from.

I have suggested an order, but there is no right one and no test to pass. Start with the bottle that makes you most curious, and let each glass take you somewhere new.
